Weed Warriors: Rick Simpson

As seen in Issue #10
Early Life: Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Ontario, Canada
Current Status: Activist/Healer
Notable Moments: After suffering a traumatic head injury in 1997 Simpson had extreme side effects such as memory loss and ringing in the ears. After a barrage of non-effective pharmaceuticals Simpson watched a TV documentary on the promise of marijuana as medicine. After trying to obtain a legal prescription several times he ended up turning to cannabis on his own accord and was nothing short of amazed at the efficacy of the oil as a medicine. Then in 2003, Simpson was diagnosed with skin cancer and after once againbeing denied and turned away from medical marijuana went back to the oil that had helped him in the past and began applying the oil directly to the spots on his skin and in a very short time completely healed himself. Since that time Simpson has cured scores of individuals hands on – many of them being stage 4 patients with internal cancers that were untreatable by any other means.
Rick Simpson’s path continued to lead him to more and more patients seeking help and al along the way he saw more and more miraculous healings from cancer and diabetes to his own mother’s long suffering psoriasis. During this time Simpson had already become a target of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after being raided and robbed of all of his plants and oil but no charges were filed. At the same time, one woman who had cervical cancer that was cured by Simpson’s linked him with Rick Dwyer of the Royal Canadian Legion. Dwyer truly believed in Simpson’s cause and tried to help him spread the word in any way possible by drumming up local support and even contacting as many local public-health authorities and elected officials as possible but found for himself resistance from every front.
By 2005, Simpson had already begun to perfect his process and had worked trades with local cannabis growers who brought in their finest buds in exchange for a split of the oil. Simpson was adamant that only the top colas were needed to make the best medicine for treating aggressive diseases like cancer – he refused to use shake for his healing oils – he says using shake would only be effective in topical cases. In 2005 Rick Simpson voluntarily walked into an office and presented scientific support for his treatment of patients along with video footage of people he has helped. Simpson also told the RCMP that he intended to continue helping people. Not long after he left the RCMP, Simpson’s house was again raided and they had seized 1,620 plants and this time he
was arrested and charged with possession, cultivation, and trafficking. Rick Simpson faced a maximum seven-year sentence on the production charge and five years less a day on the trafficking charge. Though he was facing a possible 12 years in prison, Amazingly, Simpson walked away with only a $2000
fine and no probation. Although Rick knew that he was risking possible law infractions he continued to treat himself and any patient who came to him for help. In November 25th, 2009, exactly one day before he was crowned the Freedom Fighter of the Year at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, He received a word that he had been raided again and this time his home had been seized. The government has certainly done it’s part to make sure Rick doesn’t return.
“If I return, I will be arrested and put in jail without bail or medicine. I am not afraid of their jails but I cannot go without my medicine, the system has nothing that could help me with my conditions. So for meto return to Canada would be like committing suicide. I would be thrown in jail and denied my medicine and a short time later you would hear in the news that Rick Simpson died of natural causes. I cannot tell the people of Canada who aredepending on my presence to help their medical conditions how sorry I am. But it was not me who caused this situation.”
