Weed Warriors: Woody Harrelson

As seen in Issue #7
Early Life: Born in Midland, TX and grew up in Lebanon, OH.
Current Status: Actor/Activist
Notable Moments: On June 1, 1996, Harrelson was arrested in Lee County, Kentucky, after he symbolically planted four hemp seeds to challenge the state law which did not distinguish between industrial hemp and marijuana. Harrelson won the case. Since 2003 Harrelson has served as a member on NORML’s advisory board.
Amongst a litany of weed related stunts over the past two decades, Woody also provided narration for the critically-acclaimed 1999 Canadian documentary, Grass: History of Marijuana which was about the US government’s war on marijuana in the 20th century. The film was very well done and enlightened many people to the wonders of cannabis as well as handily exposing the folly of US probibition. In 2008 Woody was on of the features of a brilliant documentary advocating the industrial production of Hemp called “Hempsters: Plant the Seed”.
In support of some of the biggest “weeds” on the planet, the great Redwoods, Woody once scaled the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with members of North Coast Earth Firstgroup to unfurl a banner that read, “Hurwitz, Aren’t ancient redwoods more precious than gold?” which was directed in protest at Maxxam Inc/PALCO CEO Charles Hurwitz, who once stated, “He who has the gold, makes the rules.”
Latest Endeavors: Since emerging into the spotlight from his role as the simple, happy-go-lucky bartender Cheers, Harrelson has been quite sought after as a lead actor. He’s consistently starred in several big movie projects each year for nearly to two decades with many of his roles getting critical acclaim – from his roles in Natural Born Killers and The People vs. Larry Flynt to more recent works like Defendor and The Messenger. Woody is still a peace activist and speaks publicly on many hot issues like the Environment and the US war in the Middle East.
Recently, in June 2010 Woody took part in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford UNICEF – Woody played for the “Rest of the World” team and actually ended it all with game winning goal during the penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw. Currently Woody is practicing what he preaches living in a self sustained community on Maui, Hawaii. Look for Woody’s next big feature film due out later this year, Bunraku starring Demi Moore.
